The Fraunhofer Institute for Organic Electronics, Electron Beam and Plasma Technology (FEP) in Dresden is dedicated to developing innovative technologies for surface refinement and organic electronics. The institute has already been able to incorporate its research findings into various projects to combat pollution from plastic waste. Among other things, the Fraunhofer FEP has developed a self-dissolving plastic that could replace conventional packaging materials in future. The advantage here is that, if the material enters the environment after use, it will simply break itself down and end up as sand in the sea. The Fraunhofer FEP is seeking to found an eco-packaging consultancy firm to further promote the use of this technology. In addition to recyclable plastics, the Fraunhofer FEP also conducts research in the field of organic electronics, including silicon-based LED construction elements, whose flexibility facilitates all kinds of applications, from wearables, smart glasses and flexible lighting to microdisplays.
