Electronics for energy-saving information and communication technology

Fraunhofer IPMS

Fraunhofer Mikroelektronik greenict

Despite all technical efforts, the total energy consumption of information and communication technology has risen continuously in the past. Against the socio-political background of the global reduction of CO2 emissions, the challenge for the development of electronic systems is to minimise resources. To achieve this, it is necessary to consider the entire value chain of electronic products, including the manufacturing processes and supply chains.

Fraunhofer IPMS has set itself the goal of actively promoting this resource minimisation together with the Research Fab Microelectronics Germany (FMD). In addition to energy-saving sensor edge cloud systems and energy-efficient communication infrastructures, Fraunhofer IPMS focuses in particular on resource-optimised microelectronics production. The institute can draw on extensive experience gained in the institute's two cleanrooms (200 mm MST line and 300 mm microelectronics line). With its expertise, Fraunhofer IPMS offers a broad spectrum of comprehensive services for system, IC and material manufacturers in order to realise resource-optimised and environmentally friendly electronics production. In the field of processing, the institute supports its customers with resource-optimised consulting and development services, particularly in the area of lithography and wet processes. This includes both the investigation of alternative materials (e.g. the investigation of cerium oxide-free slurries for CMP processes) and their consumption reduction as well as the optimisation of energy consumption to reduce CO2 pollution.
