Besides the developments in visual art, music and theatre, Dresden can claim to have made important contributions to the history of European literature.
Romantic literature had one of its centres here, well-known expressionist authors worked in Dresden, and, from Karl May to Erich Kästner, writers who were rooted in the cultural landscape of Dresden have enriched 20th century German literature.

Erich Kästner: »Resignation is not a point of view«

Literature plays an important role in the present as well; a variety of events organized by institutions, associations and authors form an important forum for the cultivation of literature.
