City Networks

European integration is becoming more and more influential for the work of local governments. Already some 80% of the European regulations are actually implemented at municipal level, whereby core areas of municipal self-administration are increasingly affected. This necessarily determines the scope for municipal policy-making and becomes especially clear in respect of the basic public services offered by local government bodies. It has thus become indispensable for the local governments – and their public enterprises – to undertake every possible effort to represent their interests via the most varied channels in European opinion- and decision-making.

The various general and thematic city networks, both in Germany and at European level, are especially suitable platforms for the effective representation of municipal interests.

The City of Dresden is active in the working group "Europe" of the Association of Cities and Municipalities in Saxony and cooperates closely with the European representative office of the Saxon local authorities in Brussels.

The City of Dresden also represents the Climate Alliance on the political executive of the "Sustainable Cities and Towns" campaign, a "network of networks" promoting sustainable urban development.

The City of Dresden is a member of the German section of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR/ RGRE).

Since 2004 Dresden has been a member of the European city network EUROCITIES, where currently are involved over 130 large European cities.

The City of Dresden is also an active member of the POLIS network which promotes, supports and advocates innovation in local transport.
The City of Dresden is supported by the Upper Elbe Transport Network (VVO), the Dresden public transport provider (DVB), the Dresden Technical University and the Fraunhofer Institute for Transportation and Infrastructure Systems IVI.

In 2010 and 2011 Dresden has held the presidency of POLIS. According to this position a conference on „Innovation in transport for sustainable cities and regions" was organised in Dresden. For more information about POLIS:
