Child, Youth, and Family Work

Children, youth, and family social services are available to all people, no matter their age. Immigrant families need support, especially in the beginning. There are many facilities for children and young people, as well as family centers and information centers for this purpose. There are special services directed to immigrants.

In order to support children and young people between ages 6 and 18, there are “educational sponsorships” in Dresden. Adults, called sponsors, volunteer to help immigrant children and young people to improve their skills and abilities in language and school. They can answer questions about the German school system, or write applications for a place in a training course or university. The sponsors often become important confidant for the whole family.

In order to improve the social and professional integration, immigrant children, young people and their families can also get support from various information centers. The information centers also offer information about, and support, the process of getting foreign degrees recognized.

By 2020, the Dresden city administration should therefore take the following steps:

  •  Expansion and improvement of the services of various information centers to better reach and support immigrants

  • Sufficient financial help for the “educational sponsorships” so that they can even better support the educational integration of children and youth
