Contributions from around the world

The decision to reconstruct the Dresden Frauenkirche was received with worldwide approval and support. The process of reconstruction was heavily based on generous donations.

Through great international interest in contributing financially, the project evolved to become a symbol of peace and reconciliation far beyond Dresden's city boundaries. Even after construction works have long been finished, an interest in the Dresden Frauenkirche still remains. The building receives continuous support from all around the world.

In the following, some of the foundations and associations whose work was devoted to the reconstruction of the Frauenkirche are listed.

Dresden Frauenkirche Foundation

The »Dresden Frauenkirche Foundation« was founded as a charitable organisation in 1994. In this way, the Free State of Saxony, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Saxony and the City of Dresden were able to coordinate their efforts in all matters promoting the reconstruction of the church. The Foundation was the building owner and therefore responsible for the actual planning and execution of the reconstruction.

Since 2005, the Foundation's main purpose lies in the organisation of everyday life in the Frauenkirche and the maintenance of the building. Its objective is to put the motto of the Frauenkirche »Building bridges - living reconciliation - strengthening faith« into action.

Subsequent to the citizens' initiative of 1989, the »Society to Support the Reconstruction of the Frauenkirche Dresden« was founded. After the reconstruction of the building had been completed, the society lost its initial purpose and was succeeded by »The Society for Promotion of the Dresden Frauenkirche« in 2003. This society continues the successful work of its predecessor with the aim to ensure on-going support for the Frauenkirche Dresden. A network of societies and organisations throughout Germany and abroad has been established to educate about this historic building as well as to organize fund raising and events.

The Dresden Trust (Great Britain)

In response to the »Call from Dresden«, the »Dresden Trust« was founded in Great Britain in 1993. The initial objectives of the organisation were to promote religion and to support Dresden's efforts to reconstruct the Frauenkirche in memory of the victims of the air raids during the Second World War. In this way, the Orb and Cross was donated as a symbol of British-German reconciliation.

Since 2002, when Dresden Trust additionally introduced the concept of cultural exchange, it has been actively engaged in promoting school links and scholarship programmes.

Friends of Dresden Inc. (United States)

In 1994, Nobel Prize winner Prof Günter Blobel founded »Friends of Dresden« in New York. The American partner organisation of The Society for Promotion of the Dresden Frauenkirche pursued reconciliation with its former enemy and the promotion of global peace. US-participation in the Dresden bombings of 1945 led Friends of Dresden to support the reconstruction of the city. Generous donations enabled financing different projects besides the Dresden Frauenkirche, such as the Dresden Synagogue.
