Registration of children starting school

All children born between 1 July 2016 and 30 June 2017 are required to attend school from the beginning of the academic year 2023/2024, and must be registered for school.

When do you have to register your child for school?

Please register your child for school on one of the registration days:

14:00 to 18:00 on Thursday 15 September 2022 or
14:00 to 18:00 on Tuesday 20 September 2022

On the website of the desired school you can find out whether the primary school offers another day for school registration, too.

Where will school registration take place?

You can go to a community primary school in your school district to register your child for school. You have to register your child even if he or she will go to a community primary school outside your school district. Otherwise it is possible to choose the “Universitätsschule” with a school district which is extendend all over Dresden. Another way for registration of your child/ren are independent schools.

What do you need to bring with you on the registration day?

ID of the parent or guardian who is registering the child
The child’s birth certificate
Registration form
Letter on school registration from the School Administration Office (if available)
Proof of sole custody (if applicable)

Measles Protection

Proof of sufficient measles protection is not required when registering for school, but only during the medical school enrolment examination by the health office. Compulsory education and the right to education exist even if the child does not have sufficient protection against measles. Children who don´t have the necessary proof are nevertheless admitted to a school. The guardians are threatened with a fine of 2.500, 00 euros per school year. )

Can younger children be registered for school?

Children born between 1 July 2017 and 30 September 2017 may be registered for primary school on the registration days. In this case, school automatically becomes compulsory at the time of registration. If your child was born after 30 September 2017, you may request early enrollment in school. Your child can only be enrolled in school if he or she has reached the necessary level of physical and intellectual development.

Medical checks at school

All children must attend a medical examination before starting school. This check-up is conducted by medical officers from the local Health Authority. At least one parent must be present at the examination. You will be informed of the time and place of the examination on the registration day.
