Retail Trade in Dresden: Versatile and Attractive

Dynamic population growth (+9 percent since 2000), rising purchasing power (+12 percent) and the boom in city tourism are all contributing to expansion in the retail sector.

Dresden is one of Germany's most important cities for shopping and a big pull for visitors from Russia, the Czech republic and Poland.

Almost 30 percent of daily tourist spending is on shopping.

Counting only the opening of Centrum Galerie (52,000 sqm) in 2009 and the extension to Altmarkt Galerie in 2011, city-center selling space has grown by 70,000 sqm.

Altogether the city has roughly 930,000 sqm of selling space with rental charges of up to around 100 euros per square meter.

Dresden's Neumarkt square stands out for its exclusive range of products, with the QF Quarter by the Frauenkirche church. The small boutiques in the Neustadt district sell less conventional goods.

Everything is in place for the retail business to flourish in the long term. The local public transport timetables take into account all the shopping locations in and out of town, as well as opening hours being longer in the evening or on special occasions.

The number of parking lots in the city center has also risen now that the Altmarkt underground lot and the Centrum Galerie parking garage have opened.

But the city has not yet exhausted its full potential for shopping. At present, for example, construction is in progress on a shopping mall at Dresden central station.
