Türckische Cammer
Turkish Chamber in the Armoury
The Türckische Cammer (Turkish Chamber) is one of the oldest and most important collections of Ottoman art anywhere in the world outside Turkey.
It was the Electors of Saxony who, from the 16th to the 19th century, collected treasures associated with the fashion for “turquerie”, including splendid riding gear, coats of mail, helmets, banners, weaponry and apparel. Saxon admiration for the Ottoman Empire reached its height during the reign of the elector Augustus the Strong. The dominant exhibit is an Ottoman three-mast tent made of gold and silk: 20 metres long, 8 metres wide and 6 metres tall. Other highlights include eight life-sized carved wooden horses. Each of these Arabian stallions, which weigh around 150 kg and have magnificently ornate trappings, is unique.
