Top-Class Research in Dresden

European porcelain, coffee filters, single lens reflex cameras, portable micro devices, and 3D displays have one thing in common: They were all invented in Dresden.

The creative genius and research spirit still continue unceasingly in Dresden today as the exceptionally high concentration of research institutions demonstrates so impressivel.

Dresden is the largest scientific hub in eastern Germany: Twelve institutes of the Fraunhofer Society, three institutes of the Max Planck Society, five institutes of the Leibniz Association, the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) and numerous other research facilities conduct both fundamental research as well as applied research at the highest level.

The Technische Universität Dresden is the only university in the new federal states that stands a chance to be awarded the title »University of Excellence« and to be supported accordingly. State Capitol of Dresdens First Mayor Dirk Hilbert calls to all Dresdeners to register as supporters for TU Dresden.

But what makes dresden unique is the strong network between research institutions, citizens and industry.

A high acceptance of technology and a tradition of engineering have long been firmly anchored among Dresden's population. TU Dresden, not university-related research institutions and cultural partners have formed the alliance "DRESDEN concept" to establish a unique alliance of top research quality. At the initiative of the City of Dresden, the network "Dresden–City of Science" was founded in 2004.
