History and tradition

The beginnings

The Dresden Striezelmarkt was from the very beginning a town market, and has been at home in the city since 1434. Originally a modest one-day market, it has grown over the centuries to become one of the most renowned and most popular Christmas markets in Germany. Every year, more than 240 market traders gather to offer their wares and to confirm the reputation of the Striezelmarkt as a showcase of traditional arts and crafts. The focus of attention at the market, however, remains the Original Dresden Christstollen, the Christmas cake speciality which lent the Striezelmarkt its name.
