Rail travel

Railway network

The German railway network links Dresden with all major German and European destinations.
Long-distance trains to and from Dresden arrive at and depart from the stations »Dresden-Hauptbahnhof« (main station) and »Dresden-Neustadt«, and in many cases serve both.
Dresden-Hauptbahnhof (main station) is located at the southern end of the city centre, which is easily reached by foot.
Two tram routes run into the city centre from Dresden-Neustadt station, which is situated on the opposite side of the river Elbe.
Both stations offer numerous options to change to Dresden's local public transport network. Trams, buses und suburban rail services run at regular short intervals, as a comfortable alternative to a long walk or a long wait in the city traffic.

Whereas the buses and trams of the Dresden transport corporation DVB concentrate on destinations within the city, the three suburban railway services also serve the neighbouring communities, above all those in the Elbe valley.
