Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Gesine Schwan

Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Gesine Schwan wurde 1943 in Berlin geboren. Sie studierte Romanistik, Geschichte, Philosophie und Politologie an der Freien Universität Berlin und an der Universität Freiburg. 1970 promovierte sie an der FU Berlin. 1974 folgte die Habilitation an derselben Universität. Von 1977 bis 1999 forschte und lehrte Frau Schwan als ordentliche Professorin für Politikwissenschaft am Otto-Suhr-Institut der Freien Universität Berlin. Sie lehrte auch u.a. in Washington, Cambridge und New York. Von 1999 bis Herbst 2008 war sie Präsidentin der Europa-Universität Viadrina in Frankfurt/ Oder und gehört zu den Initiatoren der Humboldt- Viadrina School of Governance (HVSG), welche im März 2009 gegründet wurde, um seit dem 1. November 2009 den berufsbegleitenden »Master of Public Policy« anzubieten. 2004 kandidierte sie als Kandidatin von SPD und Bündnis 90/Die Grünen bei der Wahl zum Bundespräsidenten und unterlag dabei nur knapp. Im Mai 2008 wurde Gesine Schwan erneut durch die SPD für das Amt der Bundespräsidentin nominiert. Der damalige Amtsinhaber Horst Köhler hat die Wahl mit 613 Stimmen im ersten Wahlgang gewonnen. Von Januar 2005 bis September 2009 war Gesine Schwan Koordinatorin der Bundesregierung für die grenznahe und zivilgesellschaftliche Zusammenarbeit mit der Republik Polen.

Prof Dr Dr Gesine Schwan was born in Berlin in 1943. She studied Romance languages, history, philosophy and politics at the FU Berlin – Free University Berlin and the University of Freiburg. She gained her doctorate at the FU Berlin in 1970, followed by habilitation at the same university in 1974. From 1977 to 1999, Professor Schwan taught and researched as a full professor at the Otto- Suhr-Institut of the Freie Universität Berlin. She also taught in Washington, Cambridge and New York, among others. From 1999 to the autumn of 2008, she was President of the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt/Oder and was one of the initiators of the Humboldt-Viadrina School of Governance (HVSG), which was established in March 2009 and has offered a Master of Public Policy part-time degree course since 1 November 2009. In 2004, she was nominated by the SPD (Social Democratic Party of Germany) and the Bündnis 90/ Die Grünen (Alliance 90/The Greens) as their candidate in the German presidential election and lost by a narrow margin. In May 2008, Gesine Schwan was again nominated for presidential office by the SPD. On this occasion, Horst Köhler won the election in the first round with a total of 613 votes. From January 2005 to September 2009, Gesine Schwan was the German Federal Government’s Coordinator of German-Polish Intersocietal and Cross-Border Cooperation.
